Student Learnings: What students should know and be able to do

  • The student will explain how adults and parents can help school-age children meet their developmental needs.
  • The student will identify the six principles of scientific study of children including:
    • All children have basic needs.
    • Development occurs in stages.
    • Children see the world from their own point of view.
    • Play is important.
    • Context affects development.
    • There are many theories and no one is "right."
  • The student will describe the physical development of school-age children. 
  • The student will describe the intellectual development of school-age children. 
  • The student will describe the social-emotional development of school-age children. 
  • The student will describe the importance of play and play activities in children's lives.
  • The student will explain how adults can help children learn through play, art, music, science and books.
  • The student will describe ways to protect children from neglect and abuse.
  • The student will list resources available for children in crises.
  • The student will recognize needs of children with developmental differences.
