Student Learnings: What students should know and be able to do
Pre Performance Assembly and Maintenance
- Properly maintain instrument at an intermediate level.
Performance Skill
- Increase tonguing to minimum of 16th notes at quarter=100.
- Have a basic understanding of how to correctly produce vibrato (flute and saxophone).
- Produce pitches in the following ranges:
- flute: low C to high Bb
- oboe: low Bb to high D
- clarinet: low E to high G
- saxophone: low Bb to high F
- bassoon: low Bb to high F
- trumpet: low F# to high G
- French horn: low C to high G
- baritone/trombone: low E to high G
- tuba: low E to high G
- Be able to recognize and correct intonation problem.
Reading Skills and Practice Habits
- Understand the concept of phrasing and observe phrasing indications.
- Demonstrate and apply basic alternate fingerings/positions.
- Correctly name, finger and tap notes, locate bell notes in rhythm while tapping the foot.
Mallets
- Select appropriate mallets for instrument and music.
Rudiments
- Student will execute written musical direction at an advanced level.
- Execute rudiments at a medium tempo.
- Correctly execute rolls in 6/8 meter.
- Correctly execute rolls and rhythms in 2/2.
Timpani
- Dampen timpani when appropriate.
- Demonstrate proper sticking, roll technique on Timpani.
Other
- Accurately play dynamics with appropriate stick/mallet heights.
- Understand conducting patterns in mixed meter.
- Accurately perform scales and arpeggio in Bb, Eb, F, Ab, C and G Major.
- Accurately adjust intonation while playing with other instruments.
- Recognize melody, harmony and counter point.
- Identify the style of the literature performed (overture, suite, world music).
Key Signatures
- Understand the basic concept of minor keys.
Musical Literacy
- Understand common music terms.
- Demonstrate different articulations (legato, staccato, marcato, accents, tenuto).
Rhythm and Meter
- Understand and demonstrate rhythmic values of triplet notes and rests.
