FOOTBALL: Williams, Horvath and Popanda Named to 2010 Don Hansen All-Super Region Three TeamTuesday, December 28, 2010 Brookfield, Ill. – St. Cloud State senior wide receiver Fred Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.), junior center Scott Horvath (Eagan) and defensive lineman Josh Popanda (Twin Lakes, Wis.) have been named to the 2010 Don Hansen All-Super Region Three Team. Williams was named to the First Team while Horvath and Popanda are Third Team members. The First and Second-Team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2010 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Team will be named in January. Williams has earned three All-American honors this season as he was named to the AP Little All-American, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Daktronics Division II All-American First Teams. A three-time All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) team pick, Williams re-wrote the record book for receivers at St. Cloud State during his career. He leaves the program with single game records for passes caught (15), receiving yards (236-twice) and touchdown receptions (4-ties the record); single season records for passes caught (95), and receiving yards (1,616); and career records for passes caught (264), and receiving yards (3,804). In 2010, Williams caught 95 passes for 1,616 yards and 17 touchdowns. Horvath is a 2010 All-NISC First Team selection. He centered for redshirt first-year quarterback Phillip Klaphake who was named the NSIC Offensive Newcomer of the Year. The Husky offense averaged 32.2 points per game in posting a 10-3 overall record. St. Cloud State averaged 195.7 yards rushing and 227.9 yards passing during the 2010 season for a total offense averaged of 423.6 yards per game. Popanda was named to the 2010 All-NSIC First Team Defense. At the year end awards banquet, Popanda was given the Keith Nord Award, which honors a player for his dedication and commitment to the team. Popanda had 29 tackles this season including a team high 8.5 tackles for loss. He also recovered two fumbles and returned one for a touchdown. The Huskies defense held their opponents to 18.4 points per game and 324.5 yards of total offense. St. Cloud State is ranked 12th in the final AFCA Division II Coaches’s Poll. The Huskies tied the school record for wins with ten and set a school record most games played in a season with 13. St. Cloud State advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoff for the third time in school history. The Huskies won their opening round game, 42-28, over Hillsdale College. In the second round, St. Cloud State lost a heartbreaker, 20-17 in overtime to eventual national champion, University of Minnesota Duluth. |
