Nursery Rhymes, Poetry, and Book Talk Presentations
Students develop speaking skills as they present a nursery rhyme, poem, and a book talk to their classmates over the course of the year. It is fun to see the students’ creative props and costumes.
Memory Books
Throughout the school year, each student makes a hard covered memory book incorporating writing samples, photos, and artwork highlighting special activities and events that occur during the year. The end product is a forever keepsake.
Science Museum Fieldtrip
Each year second graders test out a variety of hands-on exhibits and activities during our exploration of the Science Museum of Minnesota. A highlight is attending the Omni Theater movie on the big screen.
Artist-in-Residence
Second graders have had various theater experiences through Highland's Artist-in-Residence program. It is funded through Highland students’ fundraising efforts. With special guest and actor T. Mychael Rambo, students learn about theater and expressing themselves through poetry.
Insects
One of our most exciting science unit is the study of insects. Students watch the metamorphosis of mealworms, wax worms, caterpillars, and milkweed bugs as they change into their adult form. Shhhhhh.....don’t tell, it is a surprise.
