Second Grade Curriculum
Description of ISD 196 Curriculum
Reading
Reading is organized into units of studies. Students will be bringing home books at their reading level.
Writing
Through community writing and independent writing children work on becoming successful writers.
Math
Contents are carefully sequenced and interrelated so that each topic builds upon the concepts and skills in previous topics. Some topics covered are:

patterning and grouping
- measurement
- money
- time
- addition
- subtraction
- multiplication
- division
- fractions
- geometry
- solving real-world problems
At home practice on math facts is part of the 2nd graders homework.
Word Study
Through word study children learn to read and write high frequency and patterned words that can be used in their daily literacy activities.
Science
Students use FOSS (Full Option Science System) science materials in a hands-on discovery process approach. Topics include:
- "Balance and Motion"
- "Plants and Animals"
- "Air and Weather"
