Track- Shot Put and Discus

What is a Shot Put?

A shot put is a metal, ball-shaped object, that weighs 12 lbs. As pictured at the upper left., you step into this ring when you are throwing the shot put. The key when throwing the put is to use one of many different techniques. The one technique typically used by beginners is the power throw. It is the easiest because it only takes 2 steps to do. The technique typically used for more experienced throwers is the spin. It is a pretty self-explanatory throw. You proceed to the back of the ring, spin around to the center, and then act like you are doing a power throw. The final throw which serves as more of an alternate to the other two is the glide. You proceed to the back of the ring, and use your legs to power glide your way to the center of the ring, at point in which you will do a power throw.

What is a discus?

A discus is a frisbee-like object that is metal and is longer in width, making it harder than a frisbee to throw. Discus uses the same exact techniques as the shot-put. The hard part about disc is that it is harder to throw correctly. The distances of discus are often greater numbers, because it is lighter. As shown to the left, the setup for disc is very similar to shot. The only difference is that the sector is farther away.
