The Chess Team is open to all Eastview students, regardless of grade or level of skill. The coach is Mr. Dettmer, who is beginning his 18th season of overseeing the team. It is one of the few teams at Eastview that has both a fall and spring season. We begin the first week of school with an information meeting. In September and October, we play a 10-game schedule with other schools in our division: Eagan, Apple Valley, Rosemount, Northfield. Now that Farmington and Shakopee are a part of our conference, we hope to add one or both of them to our fall league in the near future. Most matches are on Mondays after school from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. There are also two all-day Saturday tournaments (one in October and one in November) involving the teams from our division; one is a team competition and the other is an individual tournament. The fall season ends the first week of November followed by several months of players engaging in other school activities. Once mid-February arrives, we start practicing several times a week in preparation for the Lake Conference Tournament and the State Tournament which occur in March. The spring season ends at the conclusion of the State Tournament.

2018 Schedule

During the fall season, we meet after school in room B225 for both matches and practices. For away matches, we either take the school's Expedition, carpool, and/or share a bus with another team. Practices during the fall season are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:15 p.m. Depending on the day, we review previous games, discuss strategy, and/or conduct challenge matches for board placement.

Due to high-quality players and strong student leadership, the EV chess team has established a tradition of excellence that we hope to continue:

* 1st place in our fall league 11 of the past 12 years

* South Suburban champions for 6 of the past 7 years

* Overall record of past 13 years is 119 wins and 9 losses

* State Champions 2 of the past 5 years with a second place finish in 2018!
