The
New York Times has called Dames at Sea “a real winner, a little
gem of a musical.” Critics have applauded its delightful melodies,
toe-tapping rhythms, and story of love and Broadway dreams. Described
as a musical for all ages, young and old, with nostalgia for the old,
high camp for the young and silliness for all, Dames at Sea was a hit
show of the 1968 off-Broadway season. Voted best musical by Time, Look,
Newsweek, and the New York Post, Dames at Sea has enjoyed two successful
New York runs. A a nifty pastiche of all those “follow the fleet
down 42nd Street” musicals redolent of the old Broadway and the
Hollywood era of Busby Berkley movie musicals, this spoof bursts with
the nostalgia of the 1930’s as a songwriting sailor saves the show
and the hometown girl finds both stardom and love. |
