SYNOPSIS
Duke Frederick is a usurper reigning over one of the great dukedoms
of France from which he has disposed and banished his elder brother,
the lawful Duke, who, with a band of loyal friends, takes refuge in
the Forest of Arden where they live a carefree, rustic life like that
of old Robin Hood.
Each brother has a daughter who is his only heir, and these girls, brought
up together from infancy, are devoted to each other. Duke Frederick
retains Rosalind, his niece, at his court as companion to his daughter
Celia. One day they happen to see a wrestling match between the Duke's
champion and a extremely young, inexperienced lad, named Orlando, who
comes off the victor. Duke Frederick is greatly pleased with the youth's
bravery and skill until he learns that he is the son of close friend
of the former Duke. Rosalind, however, is delighted. She has been talking
to Orlando, and a romantic attachment between the two has already developed.
Duke Frederick hears that more young noblemen are daily joining the
exiles in the forest, and finding the respite from court pomp and intrigue
very agreeable. His envy and malice vents itself upon his niece, because
she is popular with the people who pity her. He orders her to quit the
court, but Celia refuses to be left behind, so they disguise themselves
and leave the palace with Touchstone, the court clown. Rosalind appears
as a sturdy young countryman and takes the name of Ganymede, while Celia
is dressed as a village maiden and is called Aliena. Having taken sufficient
money, they at last reach their destination, the Forest of Arden, where
they buy the house and sheep of a shepherd and establish themselves
contentedly until they can locate Rosalind's father, the senior Duke.
After the wrestling match, Orlando is warned by their old family servant,
Adam, that his eldest brother, who has always been cruel and unjust
to him, is planning to kill him. Orlando is penniless and friendless,
but Adam gives him the five hundred crowns he has saved in his long
years of servitude, and begs the young man to flee with him as his companion.
They wander about uncertainly, finally reaching the Forest of Arden.
Orlando starts off in frantic search for food for the exhausted Adam,
and, coming across the senior Duke and his company at dinner under the
trees, brusquely demands some of their food. The kindly Duke, upon learning
that Orlando is the son of his beloved friend, welcomes both the travellers
very heartily.
Orlando, continually pining for Rosalind, write poems on her charms
which he fastens on trees where he carves her name, to bear witness
to his love. Rosalind finds these poems, and, when she meets Orlando,
is dismayed because of her manly disguise, but she quickly invents a
plan where she may see him often and test his affection. Talking to
him in a arch, boyish manner, she tells him that love is merely a madness
and offers to cure him. Orlandoreadily accepts her invitation to visit
the cottage daily and talk to her as though she were really Rosalind.
She, on her part, seems bent only on proving to him how whimsical and
shallow women are, so as to make him ashamed of his love.
One morning, Orlando finds a sleeping man is the forest and recognizes
his cruel brother Oliver, who Duke Frederick has sent out to find Orlando
and bring him back. Orlando rescues him from attack by a large snake,
and from a lioness, but the beast tears his arm badly. Oliver, awakening,
sees his brother's struggle for his life, and is overwhelmed with shame
and remorse. With tears he beseeches Orlando's forgiveness which is
readily granted. Orlando is too weak from his wound to proceed to the
cottage, so he sends Oliver with the news of his accident, at which
Rosalind faints. Oliver and Celia fall in love with each other at first
sight and Orlando arranges with the Duke for a speedy marriage, but
he confesses to Rosalind how bitterly he resents his own unhappy state.
Rosalind, satisfied that his devotion is strong and lasting, goes, still
in her disguise as a shepherd, to the Duke, her father, and assures
him she will produce Rosalind by her secret magic on the day of the
wedding, if he will consent to her marriage with Orlando. Clad in the
rich garments of her rank, she appears before her delighted father and
lover, then kneels to ask the Duke's blessing.
It is a joyous, eventful time for others that these two young couples,
because with them are also married two pairs, Touchstone, the court
clown, and a country maid, together with a young shepherd and shepherdess.
As the dancing is about to start, a breathless messenger breaks in upon
the party with the exciting news that Duke Frederick, while on his way
with an army to exterminate the Forest of Arden colony, had met an old
religious hermit who had succeeded in turning him from his purpose.
Stricken with remorse, he becomes a recluse, leaving the dukedom to
the rightful Duke and his followers.
