January 2018 Newsletter from Principal Wollersheim

January 2, 2018

On behalf of the Rosemount High School Faculty and Staff, I wish each and every one of you a Happy New Year!

As students return to school following winter break, it is a great time for adults to remind them that they have already completed a portion of the winter trimester prior to break, and it is important to start off January focused on course work. We will be at the mid point of the winter trimester at as we reach the heart of January.

Friday, January 12 will be a Data Analysis Day for all of the district High Schools. Teachers will be working together to improve student academic and test performance. There will be no school for high school students on this day.

Monday, January 15th is Martin Luther King Jr Day. Our district recognizes this day as a national holiday and all schools and offices will be closed. There will be no school for all students on this day.

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on Thursday, January 18 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and on Friday, January 19 from 7:00 – 10:00 a.m. Due to conferences, there will be no school for high school students on Friday, January 19.

The registration process for the 2018 – 2019 school year begins in January. At Rosemount High School we have always believed that the registration process is very important. This is the time for students to reflect on how their high school path connects with their future plans. Students should be partnering with their parents, teachers, and counselors to select their academic plan for next school year. So that you can best assist your son(s)/daughter(s) with this important process, we invite you (parents of students currently in grades 9 – 11) to a Parent Registration Information Meeting. The meeting is this Thursday, January 4, at 7:00 p.m. in our Performing Arts Center. Parents of students currently in grade 8 are invited to a 9th Grade Parent Registration Information Meeting on Thursday, January 11, at 7:00 p.m. in our Performing Arts Center. At these meetings parents will be provided with the information they need to understand the registration process. For complete details regarding registration, parents may also visit the Rosemount High School Registration web site found at https://www.district196.org/rhs/registration . Parents are also always welcome to contact the counseling department (651–423–7517) with any registration questions. I am looking forward to our meeting(s) together regarding registration!

If you have received this month's message from me in past years, you know I usually remind parents with students attending college next year to compete the FAFSA at this time. However, last year the Department of Education came out with a new statement for me to share this year. Here it is:

The 2018–19 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) season began earlier than previous FAFSA application cycles. Since October 1, 2017 students have been able to fill out the FAFSA for the 2018-19 school year. (In the past, the FAFSA didn’t launch until Jan 1). In addition, applicants no longer need to estimate income and tax information and have been able to retrieve date directly from the IRS right from the day the FAFSA launched. Students also now have information about their Expected Family Contribution earlier, helping them as they’re going through the college application process.

As always, make sure you and your child/children each have a FSA ID (This replaced the old PIN system starting last year) for completing the FAFSA online. You and your child/children can apply for a FSA ID online at http://www.pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/appinstr.jsp . You may still access the FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ . If you need information regarding financial aid (for any college or university), I recommend you call the financial aid office at the college(s) of your choice. Finally, feel free to contact our counseling department (651–423–7517) if you have questions about the financial aid process.

Winter sports and activities are now in full swing. Community support for our fall activities was outstanding! Together, let's show our support for our winter activities.
I look forward to seeing you at these events!

I am looking forward to working together to help our students get off to a great start in the new year. Again, my best wishes for a Happy New Year to each of you!

Go Irish!
