Rosemount High School Nominates Students for ExCEL Award

Rosemount High School has nominated Tess Grunklee and Jason Senthil for the ExCEL (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) Award.

Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League, ExCEL is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors. Students who are active in fine arts and/or athletic activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens in their community are eligible for the award.

ExCEL Award recipients are selected through a multi-level process that involves League member schools and an independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota. Award recipients will be recognized on KMSP-TV during the Girls' and Boys' State Hockey and Basketball tournaments.

Teresa (Tess) Grunklee is the daughter of Brian and Patricia Grunklee. She is on the "A" Honor Roll and has a GPA of 4.0 and is ranked #1 in her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Chinese Honor Society and is active in GOAT (group of active teens). She is a Respect Retreat Leader as well as an AP Scholar. Tess is a 3 time varsity letter winner in Cross Country. Tess is also a letter winner in Nordic Ski. She has received the Rookie of the Year Award as well as the Outstanding Academic Athlete Award. She was voted to be the captain for the 2016/17 Nordic Ski season. She is also a varsity letter winner in Track and Field and received the All State Academic Award. While participating in Track and Field, her team was Section 3AAA champions. She is a member of the varsity band, the pep band and Gustavus Honor Band. She has received excellent and superior ratings at the Solo and Ensemble Contests. She has volunteered at her church and leads many programs within that community. She volunteers at the local library during the summer months. Tess also participates as a middle school track volunteer and has volunteered with numerous sport camps.

Jason Senthil is the son of Senthil Kumar and Suguna Ganesan. He is on the "A" Honor Roll and has a GPA of 4.0 and is ranked #1 in his class. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society. Jason is a 3 time varsity letter winner in Debate and was nominated Captain for the 2016/17 season. He was also voted Most Improved and was a state finalist at the State Debate Tournament last year. He is a member of the Student Council and participates on the Robotics Team. Jason is a varsity letter award winner in Math League and was awarded leading scorer. He was also a varsity letter winner in Academic Quiz Bowl. He is a member of the varsity band and was awarded top performer at the state level. Jason was also Section Leader for 3 consecutive years and received superior ratings at the Solo and Ensemble Contests. He has also volunteered his time with Feed my Starving Children, the Lakeville Festival and the India Volunteer Care. Jason also volunteers his time with elderly patients in Music Therapy as well as volunteering at the United Health Emergency Room.

"The ExCEL Award program is an excellent opportunity for high school juniors who have excelled to receive statewide recognition for their leadership and community service," said Rosemount High School Assistant Principal Michael Manning.
