Home Front - A World War II Field Trip

Scope

This virtual field trip will give you the opportunity to observe and comment on World War II artifacts, including
primary documents, photographs, poster art and oral histories. You will obtain a copy of President Roosevelt's
Day of Infamy
speech, locate 4 World War II Posters, comment on American participation on the Home Front
and locate an oral history about the Japanese Internment camps from one of the databases, a book or one of the
web sites listed below.

Online Databases

The following databases and Web sites listed below will provide you with access to photographs, primary documents dealing with the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and oral histories from Japanese American citizens who were forced to leave their homes.

In Student Resources in Context you can obtain a copy of FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech along with other documents, articles or images of Pearl Harbor. Type in the keyword Pearl Harbor and then click on the tab Primary Sources. You obtain 6 primary source documents including FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech as well as Roosevelt's Fireside chat on declaring war on Japan. The Student Resource Center provides articles from reference materials, magazines, academic journals, primary source documents, images and podcasts.

By clicking on this link, you will find President Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066 establishing the Internment Camps. Then read a young Japanese American girl relating her experience in being relocated after Pearl Harbor and Senator Daniel Akaka sharing his experience in witnessing the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and then read President Roosevelt's Day of Infamy speech and his Fireside Chat on declaring war on Japan.

In Salem History you can obtain a copy of FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech, along with a Document Analysis of the speech. If you type in the search bar, Day of Infamy, it also will bring up FDR's Executive Order 9066, the original document and an analysis of the Executive Order.
