You need to research and locate an appropriate text or other printed material related to a Native American issue from the 18th, 19th or early 20th century. Examples of possible issues include: treaties, casinos, alcoholism, education issues, land use, hunting rights, etc. Once you have chosen an issue, compare and contrast differing viewpoints regarding that issue. Be sure to include a viewpoint from a Native American regarding your issue. This will require you to locate a Primary source/document that discusses or focuses on your issue.

The library's collection of Native American resources, include Fiction, Nonfiction, Short Story collections, Poetry, Memoirs, Autobiographies, Essay collections and more. You can browse through the RHS Native American Collection, which includes both Primary and Secondary sources:

To view the full record of any these titles on the shelf, click on the RHS Book Catalog. When you are in the RHS Catalog, select Resource Lists in the left hand column. Be sure you click on the Public Lists tab in the right hand corner. Scroll down to the Native American Resource List to view the full record of each these titles. The majority of the titles in this collection, both fiction and nonfiction, are written by Native Americans.

Selecting a Native American Issue

You can review Native American issues by searching the topics discussed in the new 6 volume set, entitled: Contemporary Native American Issues. (2006). Philadelphia: Chelsea House. Titles in this series include: Economic Issues and Development; Education and Language Restoration; Media Images and Representations; Political Issues; Sacred Sites and Repatriation; Social Life and Issues.
