China
China's historical record is extraordinarily rich. It is contained in hundreds of thousands of printed volumes and in millions of objects, many of them recently recovered through archaeological excavations. Most of Chinese history has been divided into periods defined by dynasties: families of rulers who, for a number of generations, occupied the Chinese throne. For over two thousand years, up until modern times, every Chinese dynasty has considered a solemn obligation to compile an official history of the preceding dynasty. Chinese historians traditionally saw history as going through an endless cycle of renewal and decline, through dynasty after dynasty.
