The Lightning Press prides itself on journalistic integrity. The paper is committed to serving the Eastview community with thoroughness, honesty, and objectivity in reporting. We believe that professional integrity is "the cornerstone of a journalist’s credibility." By submitting to the Lightning Press, our writers agree to abide by both the EVHS Honor Code and the newspaper's Professional Code of Ethics. This Code of Ethics is modeled after the Society of Professional Journalists.

As a journalist, one must seek truth and report it. Journalists should be honest, fair, and courageous in gathering, reporting, and interpreting information. They should:

  • Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error.

  •  Allow the subject of any news story a chance to respond.

  •   Do not oversimplify quotations or take comments out of context.

  •   Never plagiarize.

  •   Avoid stereotypes.

  •   Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact.

  •  Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
