2-sample t-test Lab activity : Are DOUBLE-STUFF Oreos REALLY Double Stuffed?
Download the documents below & ask any questions as needed!
The hypotheses are a bit odd for this lab:
Ho: mu(DoubleStuf) = 2 * mu(Traditional);
Ha: mu(DoubleStuf) <> 2 * mu(Traditional);
...these lead to the use of a bit different t-score formula, as shown on lab sheet. Page 2 of the Lab Sheet has earlier listserv discussion from the gurus regarding our unique hypotheses & t-score formula. Hopefully, all my symbols will transfer OK.
I give each team 5 or 6 DoubleStuff and 5 or 6 Traditional Oreos. (the next day, we ask how we could have increased the power of our test, etc., and I hope kids scream "increase the sample size!")
We use lab scales, borrowed from the science department. Other supplies include paper plates, milk & cups, much plasticware, sheets of wax paper. Download the pictures to check things out.
The spreadsheet is especially nice to use. If you enter the kids' numbers in order left-to-right, the spreadsheet automatically calculates correct t-scores and p-values for comparison....and grading!
