Reading Complex Information

Rationale

"Performance assessment bridges the gap between assessment and instruction. It is a dynamic form of assessment and can become an integral part of instruction that resembles day-to-day classroom work. Assessments should have instructional value. They should be worth doing in and of themselves, apart from the evaluative function they serve."

Performance assessment is different from a norm referenced test or a multiple choice test. This performance assessment is designed to assess students' ability to complete tasks related to the standard in an integrated activity that may extend over class periods. Students are required to produce a type of product for each task.

Standard: Reading, Listening, and Viewing Complex Information

A student shall demonstrate the ability to comprehend and evaluate complex information in varied nonfiction by reading, listening and viewing varied English language selections containing complex information and in these selections the student shall:

  1. A. identify main ideas and supporting information

  2. B. distinguish fact from opinions, fiction from nonfiction, or both

  3. C. identify bias, point of view and author's intent

  4. D. identify relevant background information

  5. E. analyze and evaluate the credibility of evidence and source, the logic of reasoning and how the type of communication shapes or limits information.
