Career / Decision Making:

During this unit the students explore the options that are available to them upon graduating from high school. The students discuss goal setting and study habit strategies that will enable them to to maximize their opportunities. Students also explore the different post secondary options that are available to high school graduates.


Foundations for American Government

During this unit the students examine the background and events that led to the formation of the United States government. The students discuss the historical events that shaped the philosophy and direction of our government. Students complete a timeline that shows the important world events that influenced those who drafted the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

 


Blueprint for a Nation

This unit provides a general breakdown to the formation, compromises, and structure of the United States Constitution. The students examine the Constitution as a primary document, analyzing the content and structure of the document. Students also analyze the specific powers granted by the Constitution to the 3 branches of government.


Citizenship: Rights and Responsibilities

Students read, discuss, and debate about issues relating to the Bill of Rights. Students look at a mixture of Supreme Court cases, current events, and historical analysis to better understand the basic rights of American citizens, and what it means to participate in government.

 

The National Government:

During this unit the students explore the options that are available to them upon graduating from high school. The students discuss goal setting and study habit strategies that will enable them to to maximize their opportunities. Students also explore the different post secondary options that are available to high school graduates.


State and Local Government:

After covering the National government, students will study the origins of the government of Minnesota. Emphasis will be placed on historical figures and events from Minnesota's past to provide a background to Minnesota politics. Students will look at how Minnesota has evolved as a state, and also look at some of the current issues that we face. Students will also learn about the local governments where they live. Students will complete a year end project where they create their own country and a sysytem of government.
